HR

Human Resources is one of the key business functions in an enterprise. It handles policy, strategy, direction and administrative matters. Perhaps one of the more important roles revolves about the welfare and nurturing of people.

The sort of people that HR attracts tend to be people who care about people but also have sufficient awareness of the need to look after the enterprise's most valuable asset so that the business is viable and sustainable.

There are literally hundreds of separate roles within the HR function, many of which are done well. Some are neglected through lack of time or resources. The marketplace simply doesn't allow sufficient budget to run all the training, safety, career planning and mentoring that may be required.

Accordingly, HR professionals have to make do. Whilst they can see what they would like to do to make the workplace a better environment, and bring their enterprise to be the employer of choice, many fall well short of the standards they would otherwise set for themselves.

Basically, more can always be done, but up till now there has not been a better way to handle HR. Clearly, if the administrative aspects of things such as rostering, timesheets, payroll, assessment, selection and discipline were more automated and less time consuming, there would be more mental space to think about important and strategic matters such as staff planning, career planning, retention, staff mentoring and counselling.

One of the most important tools of HR is the common currency used to determine the fit between a person and a task or job. For instance, how do you decide who would be the best person for a taskforce, committee, project or assignment? How do you go about selecting the best people to hire. If it is all gut feel and little science, how successful have your judgements been? How effective are the people you have chosen?

Capabilities is the best common currency to achieve consistency between recruitment, selection, assignment, rostering, performance appraisal, staff review, career planning, skills assessment, training, development, counselling, discipline, retention, retrenchment, placement, secondment, retirement and rehiring of staff.

It forms an excellent basis for recording the ability or competence, skills, experience, exposure, expertise, knowledge, qualification, certification, attributes, interests and careers of staff.

Being able to see a complete history and future assignments for staff, job candidates and potential successors, is an outstanding way of making sound choices in all of the above areas.

CBS provides all these facilities and more. Only a demonstration can describe the full extent of the support functionality and opportunities that this software creates.
